What paint can I use instead of acrylics so it's food safe? Or are acrylics fine as long as I have non-toxic varnish?

I have only done it using glazes. The glaze is painted on to create your design. Then the piece is fired in a kiln and the artwork becomes a permenant part of the piece. Check around. You probably have ceramic craft stores that will help you out. Many have a DIY area where they will let you decorate your items and they will fire it in their kiln.
