35 1/2" ??? Unbelievable.... (Stair treads)
I just finished installing cork flooring through most of my main level - I'm now about to tackle the stairs. My plan was to use an oak stair nosing with the dark "mocco" cork tile - the tile is in sheets 35.5" x 11". The stairs are 36" so I'm short a 1/2" on each tread / riser. I would assume my best bet is to add a 1/4" of "something" on each side of the cork - can anyone suggest a filler that would bo well with a dark brown cork tile (that is 7/16" thick)??? Any help on this problem would be much appreciated

Unless you have really wide treads you are going to have to rip the 11 inch width of the cork to fit behind the oak nosing.
If it were me I would use all those cut offs from the floor and put seams in the 36 inch direction in different places so that it matches the endmatching in the floor rather than try to do the span with one piece.

Your second paragraph is a bit more confusing - sorry, but I don't have a clue what you are trying to explain in that sentence. I apprecaite your reply, however, could you please elaborate???

i think he means instead of using one solid strip for the entire width of the step, use some of your scraps you've probably got laying around from the main flooring job and use 2 pieces per step, randomly staggering the joints so they match the random joint pattern in your floor.

Yes Annette, that's what I meant. I'm assuming that the rooms are wider than 35.5 inches wide so that the cork has to be endmatched somehow.
Sometimes, when we are too close to something we can't see an easy solution. I can understand how you could get focused in on doing the width in one piece.....Darn just 1/2 of an inch. I'm just suggesting that doing each step with two pieces instead of the one you can cover the entire width of the tread with no space and it would match the spacing on the floors.

I would frame each step in oak, with the treads and flooring to match the thickness running the length along each side of the steps. Like a strip border of oak. and then inset your cork in the middle.

cork on stairs?
So I see you were installing installing cork tiles on your stairs behind the wood nosing about a year ago. Was this successful? How is it holding up? Can you please post (or send) a picture? I want to do a similar installation on my stairs, and I have people telling me it's impossible. Any advice you have would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
Thanks!
