Basement insulation?

I want to add a room in my basement the only area I can add is directly under my son's room and he walks as if he has lead shoe's on. What kind of insulation should I use to quiet it down a bit down there?

The best and most cost-effective solution is to improve the carpet and carpet pad in your son's room. Insulation has little effect on low frequency noise tranmission such as footfalls (it is much more effective on high-frequency noises like conversation). The best thing you can do in the basement is to use resilient metal channels to hang 5/8" drywall on the basement ceiling. But I still think the best mitigation is going to take place above, in your son's room.
