Rasied Floor

I'm (still) finishing my basement, and have decided to put in a 10x10 rasied floor "dance area" that will form a 50s diner-look theme area. I know how to make the sub-srtucture with 2x4s on their side and how to lay the plywood, but my wife (who else) wants the floor to be higher. She asked if I could stack two 2x4s together to make the sub-structure. If I do this, should I run the second 2x4 parallel (on top of) to the first layer, or sholud they run perpendicular (across) them?

Second question -- how to I finish the edges of the floor, the part that is exposed to the open room (not against the walls). This is the part that rises up from the regular floor to the raised floor? I was thinking 1x2s, but I'm having trouble visualizing how it all joines together. How do I edge the lip where the 1x2 meet the floor surface?

Thanks for your advice.

Why not just use a 2X8 for the framing. For the place where the floor rise up, handle it just like a riser on a stair would be handled.
JUst run a piece of 1x8 to trim it off.

What kind of flooring are you going to be using? If it's wood, you would need to get what is called a stair nosing.

I'm not using 2x8 becasue the instructions I have say to lay the 2x4 on it's side -- the 4" side is against the concrete and the 2" side is facing up, forming the bed to which the plywood floor is attached. That's why I wanted to put one 2x4 on top of the other, to get a 4" floor height (ignoring the fact that a 2x4 is not really 2 inches, just using round numbers).

I'm not familiar with the term stiar nosing. Can you help me on that one?

Thanks

Just put some plastic on the floor to act as a vapor barrier and put the 2x4 on the side and build it just like a wall, but you don't raise it up.

Stair nosing is a piece of trim that you can buy. If you are going with one of the laminate floors or any kind of wood floor, the place you get it from should have the stair nosing in stock. If you put down vinyl oor tile, their is a metal trim piece, which may make a better match with what your them is. Cover the outside of the 2x4 with some 1x3 as a piece of trim.
