Attic Ventilation

The home we rent has a previously remodeled attic that was
converted into a living space , and they did a pretty good job,
except they didn't allow for good air flow ventilation when they
closed in the area with the flooring and walls , which basically
closed off the gable vents. I know I can install a ridge vent ,but
this is one of those houses built in fifties , that somebody tried
to save a dime and didn't provide any soffit area. I need some
inexpensive way to get the air in!!!! Any ideas please!!!

Open soffits

Is there any roof overhang or is the roof flush with the house ?/
Here's what I did (won't work unless you have overhang)
