basement walls/crumbling
My house is about 80 yrs old, the baement concrete walls are crumbling behind the washer and dryer. I want to paint the walls but don't know what to do to solve this problem. It looks like there is some kind of seal coat over the concrete, it's only crumbling in this one area.

It sounds like someone sealed the area by the washer and dryer, possibly because of overflows (?), with an old type of concrete waterproofing material. The problem is the material does not let the concrete breath, trapping moisture in it and accelerating deterioration.
If the problem is isolated near the surface, remove all loose/crumbling material and continue 1/2" into solid, sound concrete. The home centers sell vertical and overhead patch materials you can use to patch back the wall. If the deterioration is deep or full height you may want to consider hiring a foundations contractor.
