Could this be a Gutter Problem??
#1

I'm in a 11 year old house which I lived in for 4 years. I never had water in the basement before and as far as I know it never happened before I purchased the house. However, recently a couple of days after some torrential rain, I had water along the wall in the finished part of the basement, which at some point seeped out to an 8 X 10 area.
I had the gutters inspected and cleaned and there was some debris there. I also had a waterproofing company do an inspection. I'm told that there must be a crack in the foundation although he was unable to find it because the foundation on that side of the house is underground. They also said that the gutters couldn't have caused this problem-----that when gutters overflow the water would get in the house immediately and not 2 days later as was the case.
Is it possible that clogged gutters could send water in the basement two days after the rain has ended?

Lingering,
If you had torrential rains, maybe 2 or 3 to 6 inches, the ground had probably become saturated. And water will seek the path of least resistance. If the gutter down spouts were completely clogged they could contribute to the water problem around the perimeter of the house, to a degree. It is not the main problem.
Is the foundation block or poured concrete? Most likely there is a small crack in the wall or floor to allow the water in. Block is more prone if it has not been well waterproofed.

Hi Fred,
Thanks for your response. It does make sense that it would be both the gutters and a crack in the foundation. In answer to your question, the foundation is poured concrete. I just wish they were able to find the crack. It would sure be easier since some drywall has to be removed.
Thanks again,
Mary
