Attic Access - Roof Truss Systems
#1

Two threakds in this forum raise the question of installing foldaway attic access stairs in home with ruff truss system. Joist are 2x4 on 16" centers running perpendicular to the opening. Would have to cut 2 joists. Instructions with stairs neighbor installed in similar house advise to consult an architect or engineer. Would there be sufficient rigidity if adjacent joists are doubled and framed opening is doubled 2x4s? Any references with drawings would also be appreciated.

Your neighbor is right. Consult a designer.
sometimes your local lumber yard can get you in touch with the truss company. It is very hard to add two extra trusses to an existing roof. In fact almost impossible. Trusses are designed to hold up a certain load and be so many inches on center. cutting a truss is a sure sign of inviting danger. I would probably explore finding a place in your home to install the ladder parallel to your trusses. Good Luck
