I'm remodeling the 3rd floor in a 100+ year old home. All of the studs and joists are exposed. The HVAC contractor installed R-4.2 flexible duct in the ceiling crawl space for heat and cooling. Do I need to add insulation to the duct work or is the R4.2 OK? The crawl space is three feet high with roof vents and during the summer it gets hot.

Bob:
I would probably insulate the floor joists, this will help keep you warm in the winter.
I would also lay some insulation batts over the duct work. Keep it loose. If your attic gets hot in the summer, where is your attic fan ? Good Luck

insulating your duck work isnt a good idea only for one reason it will cost more in the summer time to cool your home because the insulation will make your duct work warmer so it will take more to keep it cool
