attic vents

On my house there are two vents (one in front of the house and one in the back) on is fully intact and the other looks as though an animal had pulled the metal apart to make a home in my attic. I'm not even sure that it's called a vent but now in the middle of the night I can hear things crawling above me. I try to take a broom to scare what ever it is and it just scratched at the ceiling. My first question is who do I call to repair this and is it something that I could do. Thank you.
