drop ceiling grid

What is the "required" or recommended spacing for the main grid on a ceiling which has the joists running the short length? I have read that 4' spacing is used and then 4' and 2' cross tees are then placed on them. Why not go with a 2' spacing on the main and then just use 2' cross tees? The ceiling will be finished with 2' X 2' panels.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions

Its a lot more work!!!!

You could indeed put the mains at 2 foot intervals, but it is lots of extra work!!. The mains are supported by the structure - lag screws and wire - every few feet. And they have to be leveled. So you are doubling your work load.

Once the mains are level and secure, installing the 4 foot members is very easy.
