Hi,
Thank you for your time. I am going to fill in an old basement water drinking well which is no longer in use but filled with water. Also, create an interior parimeter drain to collect the groundwater and divert it to a sump. I'm not affraid of hard work. What is a good debth and width to form the parimeter drain and the best way to fill in the well. Jim

Fill the well with gravel up to about 12 inches from the floor, pack it good, and finish with concrete.

BASEMENT FLOOR PREPARATION

I AM IN THE PROCESS IN FINISHING MY BASEMENT. EVEN THOUGH IT HAS A FINISHED CONCRETE FLOOR, IT IS NOT WHAT YOU WOULD SAY PERFECTLY SMOOTH. I'M AFRAID IF I LAY TILE THE IMPERFECTIONS WILL SHOW. COULD I LAY AN UNDERLAYMENT DOWN LIKE PARTICLE BOARD, AND IF I DO, SHOULD I LAY PLASTIC DOWN FIRST IN CASE THERE MAY BE SOME MOISTURE IN THE CONCRETE THAT COULD SOAK INTO THE UNDERLAYMENT? THANKS FOR YOUR HELP.

How would I enclose my furnace in a finished basement?

I'm planning on finishing my basement and want to enclose my (oil fired) furnace and hot water heater into what will become a "utility" room. Assuming I leave reasonable space for maintenance on these systems what other things should I be concerned with? I plan on using 2x4 walls, a louvered 36" door and leaving the inside walls unfinished with unfaced R13 bat insulation.
