Hello.

We need to replace (or cover up) the flooring in our basement. It's beat up tile. What are the good choices for basement flooring that's NOT carpet? I've been considering Pergo, but I've been told that it's not a good idea to put a wood product flooring in a basement. (Is Pergo really a wood product?)

Also, how about flooring in the laundry room? Right now, it's just the original concrete. It has a floor drain (the house was built in the 50's).

We've lived in the house for 4 months. So far, no water problems, although it looks like there used to be a couple of leaks from the window wells.

Thanks for your input.

I'd stay away from Pergo in the basement, especially if you think you might have occassional water leaks. Pergo can be ruined if you have a big leak. Formica is the only laminate floor with a water warranty.

OK, you don't like carpet. Options are Formica - available in many styles, tile, vinyl, linoleum (its making a comeback), or just painting it. Area rugs are also a possibility. You can do peel-and-stick tiles yourself.

What do you like? Visit a big box and see what is offered.

Cool

I had exactly the same problem in my basement. I removed all the loose tile and cleaned the floor REAL well and painted the whole thing. It's been just over a year and no problems so far.

Depending on budget and floor quality (smooth, level concrete?), you may want to consider ceramic tile. Easy to install, and lasts almost indefinatley.
