My wife and I are buying a home that has a full basement. It is not finished but we would like to finish and use it as a den. I am already aware of my small damp problem but my real question is whether or not insulating the basement is a must? Is this something that we have to find out for ourselve the hard way or is it just common sense to insulate? Right now we have white painted walls. Thanks for your help, and I have really learned much needed information from this website!!

Insulating your basement is a personal decision. Many do not insulate them, and many do. If you asked 10 people you would get 10 different answers. I think this is something you need to decide, since you will be living in the home. If it were my home, I would not insulate it. Someone else would insulate theirs. Good Luck with your decision.
