where to start??? We have an unfinfished basement. We want to add a bathroom, laundry room, bed room and a family (rec) room. What do we do first? How do we plan where to put walls? Lots of ideas but have no idea where to begin! Help!

insulating basement--ignore next 2 postings--

My wife and I are buying a home that has a full basement. It is not finished but we would like to finish and use it as a den. I am already aware of my small damp problem but my real question is whether or not insulating the basement is a must? Is this something that we have to find out for ourselve the hard way or is it just common sense to insulate? Right now we have white painted walls. Thanks for your help, and I have really learned much needed information from this website!!

Cost of excavating

I'm trying to determine if the rate of some excavation work I had done for my remodel in Washington State is a reasonable rate. It seems high to me but I have no reference to compare it to. The contractor I used is charging me $125/hour for his labor, his 12-14 yard truck, and his loader (Case 580L). It appears he is charging this rate for his drive time to and from my home as well (worth about 4 hours total). Is this reasonable for this area? Who can I call to find out for sure for this area?
