basement ceiling insulation

I bought a house that has fiberglass insulation on the floor joists on the basement ceiling. Lately we have had a heavy mildew smell and I have noticed the paper on the insulation seems moist. Should there be insulation on the ceiling ? The finished side of the basement with a drop ceiling doesn`t seem to have that problem.

I hate to tell you this, but if your ceiling insulation is damp and has mildew, you have a leak. Pull off the insulation that is damp, and start investigating. You have a leaky pipe. Yes, most basement ceilings do have insulation between the floor joists.

Insulation - foam vs. fiberglass

I am considering two different methods of finishing my basement walls. I am used to furring out with 2x2s and rigid foam insulation and drywall. I read recently a recommendation of a fully studed 2x4 wall about 2" out from the wall and using fiberglass insulation. Both cases involved a poly barrier from on floor and up to mud line. Thoughts? Duct Work in Basement

I recently bought a house and the basement has ceilings that are only about 7 feet high. However, right down the middle of the room the ceiling is only about 5 1/2 feet because the ductwork from the furnace is there. My question is, can this duct work easily be moved or is there another way to get more height?Read More
