Question

Because of the high cost of wood, what do you think about using metal studs instead of wood for finishing my basement?

I used them in my basement and in a brother-in-laws basement. I'll use them again. I found to be very easy to use. My walls are solid.

I expect you'll get some negative replies but it really comes down to what you are comfortable with.

Wood studs are the cheapest I've seen them in years. An 8-foot stud is only about $1.75 now.

But anyway, use what you're comfortable with. It's kind of a paper-or-plastic debate. There are lots of pros and cons on either side, but both will work just fine and both are being used in large volume.

Question

I haven't priced wood lately.I'm just going on what my neighbor did. I know it was expensive 6 mo. ago. The only problem I see with steel studs is that you cant push the insulation inbetween them because of the C shape of the metal stud. The standard roll isnt wide enough for a friction fit like with wood. Any ideas guys?

The greatest advantage I see in metal studs is no cull. Every stud is straight as a string. That alone saves lots of time.

I don't know what the resolution is about insulating the cavities though.

You might be able to find 16" width insulation. I used the 15" inch. Where there was a problem, I used a spray adhesive on the flaps one would normally staple.

God never said that studs need to be 16 inches apart. You can put them 15" apart if the insulation will fit better. As long as you hang the drywall horizontally, it won't care either.
