What is recommended for carpeting basements?
Is it best to glue down the type of carpet that has the pad already attached, or can pad and carpet both be laid? If so, how are they fastened to cement. I plan to carpet a rather large area that will be used as a rec-room/TV room.
Now the floor has old linoleum tile that I'm tempted to carpet over rather than scrape up.
Is this a good idea? Do I need some kind of sealant over the floor?

I too am trying to determine the best method of carpeting a basement floor. So far I've heard that glueing down the nail strips is often easier than nailing. Also, there is an 8lb vapor barrier padding that can be used. In the December issue of This Old House Magazine (page 98) they mentioned laying down "Homasote" panels on the concrete floor to provide good insulation and cushion under carpeting. I haven't looked into that option yet.

I'd be interested in what you find out and decide - I won't be ready for carpeting until Early January.

Good Luck
