Using metal studs 'flat' for basement ceiling
Hi,
I have an area about 11' wide and 20' long that all of my main hvac ducts/etc run through. I need to drop the ceiling height to accomodate those, and was wondering if I could use metal studs laid flat (to minimize height loss) screwed to blocking attached to the 2x4 walls at each end of the room. Its only purpose would be to hold up sheetrock, and some can lights.
The other alternative is to use standard wood 2x12's, but obviously Metal is easier - especially above your head!
Do you think this'll work??

Not even wood 2x4s will do this. The normal rule of thumb is that a wooden 2x4 laid flat can span up to 4 feet, and a 2x4 on edge can span up to six feet. To span 11 feet, you're going to need more help. Is there a way you can attach these dropped "joists" to the joists above them at intermediate points in the span, perhaps by vertical 2x4s up to the joists between the ducts.

John,
Yes - I can 'suspend' them at irregular intervals (depending on pipe locations/etc). Given that I could provide that support - do you think Metal will do the trick? I'd use wood 2x scrap to provide the 'hangers' and a 2x wood attachment strip at each end.
Unless you have another idea! <g>
