Question Insulation quandry

Moving into a 1950's home, checked out attic and would like to use for storage. Slate roof is in well kept condition. Insulation has degraded and falls apart when handled not to mention 50 years of dust and dirt. Insulation contractor said to leave in place and just blow new over the top.
I want to floor off about 40% for storage, but want maximum insulation.
Help!

insulation

Hello,

I am not a expert on insulation but I am a expert old homeowner.

In my first house I also had a attic like you that was used for storage that needed more insulation.

Blowing over the old insulation is not a problem.

You need to make sure that the ceiling is in good repair to hold the extra wieght.

Check your wiring, is it old? frayed? or in poor condition? I personally would be leery of burying it under insulation.

I blew mine in myself, most home improvement centers will loan or rent (at low cost with insulation purchase) a blower.

I blew it all in about 8 messy hours. (at a substantial savings from paying a contractor).

If you do it yourself watch your step and stay on the joists.

The person blowing will need to move quickly.

the person loading will be really dirty.

i hope this helps

Re: insulation - can't find home center that sells blow insulaion(?)

Hi, what state do you leave in that you were able to buy blown insulation from a home center (what home center too)? I live in NJ & can't find any.
