Noise: Tak....Tak...

Hi,

I moved into this 6 year old house 6 months before.
Everything was okay and suddenly one-day I started
to hear sound like Tak....Tak very in-frequently, and
un-predictably. Looks like sound comes from attic.

I am not sure what exactly its causing to make the noice
As such I have nothing in attic.

is it possible that, roof or attic wood make sound during
settling ??

is there a way to stop or reduce it?
it is a quiet loud sound and scares a lot when u hear
it in night

Noise in attic

If you do not have wildlife living in the attic, perhaps you have ducts for heating and cooling. Expansion and contraction as temperature changes can cause ducts to make noise.

Go up into your attic and sit until you hear the noise and locate it.
Then come back and we will tell you how to solve your problem. Good Luck

Blind guesses: Slow drip from melting ice, or a heating pipe rubbing on framing. So, go up there like Jack the Contractor recommended. Bring a good flashlight.

I had found a similar problem in my attic and what I found was that the PVC plumbing vent pipes were rubbing against the truss frame work. As the attic temp would change these PVC pipes I guess would contract and expand against the wood and cause a cracking type noise. My solution was to place some sticky felt pads between the pipes and the wood, also the PVC pipes were resting in some plastic hangers for the horizontal portion of the run and I used felt there as well and noise was stopped. Hpoe that helps.

Owens Corning basement finishing system is a SCAM!

I recently received a flyer in the mail about the Owens Corning Basement Finishing system. After reading the flyer I discovered that although it was labeled Owens Corning and it had their trademark on it along with the Pink Panther character, it was sent by a local remodeling company ( apparently cornings local distributor) I contacted these people and found out that if I wanted this basement finishing system it would have to be purchased and installed by them. Ok, so I make an appointment with this contractor of Cornings and he then calls me before arriving to get further directions to my home and asks if my wife will be there? I explained to him she would not and I was told he would not come out if both of us were not there? I told him we knew what we wanted and were prepared to buy, at this point they still refused to honor there appointment. What they were using IMHO was very hard sales tactics just like the old aluminum siding salesman days. I contacted owens cornings and after exchanging many e-mails back and forth (much of it corning requesting info) they "corning" decided I was stuck with that distributor and must do as they say! Well owens corning you can take your overpriced fiberglass wall system and shove it where the sun don't shine! Don't be had by these people. I later found out what the cost of this stuff was and I can now understand there high pressure sales tactics and requiring both husband and wife to be present so they can nail the deal right away.

Basement Insulation and Building Walls

Background: I am getting ready to finish my basement. My house is 1 year old and I am still having a little moisture on some of the basment exterior walls. I am running dehumidifiers, but it doesn't seem to be keeping up. I want to build stud walls, insulate them with fiberglass insulation and then drywall for a nice finished look. I am planning on leaving about a 3" gap between the exterior block wall and my stud walls. My questions is: (1) Would you recommend I put a plastic vapor barrier on the block walls or is the 3" gap between the block wall and stud built wall sufficient to protect my new finished stud built walls? I am trying to finish my basement as economically as possible because we are already one of the higher retailed houses on our block. So, my wife wasn't crazy about using expensive products like Drylock to seal the walls completely. Thanks for any advice. :confused: :confused:
