Hanging drywall over ductwork
#1

I am finishing my basement and have a problem, i have ductwork that runs the length of the room that i have framed in each side, i was going to hang 1/2" drywall over this but the widest part is 49" and i have been told that over time the drywall will sag, what can i do to put the drywall up without loosing too much headroom? someone said 1"x 3" every 16" apart but i am afraid these will sag as well. The main thing is trying to loose as little height as possible (from the floor to the ductwork is 6ft 4") so if i can find something that is 1/2" to 1" thick would be great. Thanks.

Drywall can span up to two horizontal feet without further support. From two to four feet, 2x4s on the side work well. From four to six feet, you're better off with 2x4s on edge. You can fudge these measurements a bit depending on whether you plan to texture and how heavily. For your 49", I'd use 2x4s on the side every 16 inches and 1/2" drywall. It'll work well.
For the vertical part if the soffit, you can do lots of thnigs. I prefer a 2x2 against the celing to hang 1/2" OSB or plywood, with a 2x2 or 2x4 at the bottom of the OSB or plywood (as a screwing surface for the drywall).

Drop Drywall....
Bram,
this method is untested by me for use with drywall. I use this basic Idea to install drops under ductwork to gain the most amount of clearance.
On 16, It should support a 1* for 1/2" drywall.
Connect an eye hook to the 1*......
Connect an eyelet to a heavy gauge drop wire and secure it to the joist above with the longest fasten Master Screw (HDepot) that is less than the duct height. Turn it in about 1" inch...
Connect the wire to the eyehook on the 1* and twist it around itself at least four times. Tighten the fasten master so the board is pulled to the correct height. Pull down on the board to take any flex out of the wire and retighten. Secure the 1* to the side frames last.
