paper tape or fiberglas mesh

Home centers and TV shows like Hometime push the mesh tape. They do this because there is less chance of screwing up the job because mesh is easier to work with.
The real answer is that paper tape, although not as strong when you are holding it in your hands, produces a stronger joint when installed. The problem with paper tape is that it has a tendency to produce bubbles, which are very difficult to remove once they appear.
If you are a skilled DIYer, I suggest that you learn to use paper tape. If installed in a perfectly straight line and taut, you can avoid the bubbles. But if you don't really feel up to the challenge, then use the mesh tape.
