insulation/form ties

The builder installed insulation in my basement is currently nailed iwth strips directly to the foundation wall. So, for a number of reasons I want to replace it with rigid insulation. When I pulled some of the insulation off, I found that the steel form ties have not been broken off under that insulation. My question is, is there a special way to cut/brake off these ties or can I just hit them with a hammer?

Hello there,

I worked cement for about 8 months & we just used a nice 21 oz. hammer & whacked the heck out of them. I highly suggest you wear safety glasses when doing this. Also keep in mind that they go flying sometimes depending on how hard you hit them. A small sledge will also suffice. Makes for a great stress reliever.
