insulation/form ties

The builder installed insulation in my basement is currently nailed iwth strips directly to the foundation wall. So, for a number of reasons I want to replace it with rigid insulation. When I pulled some of the insulation off, I found that the steel form ties have not been broken off under that insulation. My question is, is there a special way to cut/brake off these ties or can I just hit them with a hammer?

Most of the time hitting them with a big hammer will do the trick. If they just bend and do not break, get a bolt cutter and cut them off. Good Luck
