Firestopping

Can someone further explain firestopping to me? My rough in walls are a little more than 8' tall in most places, and I am wondering if I need to do something to comply with this "firestopping" thing in my basement.

Thanks!
Joe

Joe,

Take a look at this, scroll down to firestopping and you should see a good example of what is done.

Hope this helps!

Talk to your local fire code official, too. I just did on Friday and found that my town's fireblocking requirements aren't nearly as complex as the BOCA codes. They only require the vertical stops, nothing horizontally where the top plate meets the joist.

The rationale, he said, is that in most newer homes you already have 3/4" flooring and fiberglass insulation up there. Adding another firestop would be redundant (not saying I know enough to agree or disagree, but that's what he told me).
