Basement Ceiling

I RENT A TOWNHOUSE IN MASSACHUSETTS. I WANT TO MAKE THE BASEMENT A SPACE THAT CAN BE USED. SINCE IT IS NOT MY HOME AND I AM NOT BEING REIMBURSED BY MY LANDLORD, I WANT TO SPEND AS LITTLE MONEY POSSIBLE. THE BASEMENT WALLS AND FLOOR ARE POURED CONCRETE. IT IS EXTREMELY DRY AND I HAVE NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH MOISTURE. MY PROBLEM IS WITH THE EXPOSED INSULATION ON THE CEILING. THE INSULATION RESTS BETWEEN THE EXPOSED BEAMS AND OVER THAT IS AN ENORMOUS DUCT SYSTEM FOR THE FORCED AIR HEATING SYSTEM. I WANT TO COVER THE INSULATION WITHOUT HAVING TO HANG DRY WALL OR CEILING TILES. WHAT OTHER MATERIALS COULD I USE THAT ARE INEXPENSIVE?

My next door neighbor had a friend that did'nt want to put much money into his basement ceiling so he used a burlap material and stapled it to the exposed braces. Did not pull it tight but gave it a wave type appearence. I'm not sure how it would look but you probably can't beat the price and ease of installation!

Canvas (painters tarps) is another option. It can even be painted, if you want.

If you want super cheap, how about white plastic sheeting?

I know you said that you did not want to use drywall, but at about 20 cents a square foot, drywall is about as cheap of material as you'll probably find. And it will give you fire resistance and sound absorption to boot.
