What Type of vent to install???

I have to put more venting in my attic,
Currently there is just gables vents (2) and some small vents in the soffit.
I was thinking about installing continuous soffit venting.
My question is if I put in soffit vents( with the existing gable vents) will this do the job? or would I need to install some roof vents?
Cheers,
JP

attic venting

I've had the best luck with Ridge and Soffit venting. Continuous soffit vent is probably best way to go as you need square footage of soffit at least equal to square footage of ridge vent. I usually block off gable vents when doing this as they tend to work against the ridge vents.

Whoops your in Canada so make the square centimeters or square meters should be equal. LOL

Lightbulb Canada

Snow will block the ridge vent ruining it's effectiveness in winter.
It's better to use wind turbines or something that will be higher than the snow !!

vents

Id Do the soffit for sure and just put in bigger vents in the gables. And will be out of the snow. As for the turbines They lock up a lot and let the rain in ED

I live in the NorthEast, and I installed a ridge vent when I redid my roof a few years back. We had some of the worst snow storms this year then we had in many years, and snow never blocked our vent at all. I am thinking that if it does, the roof will be covered in snow as well, so ventilation may not matter, as the attic should be cold enough anyhow. The idea of a ridge vent it to keep the attic ventilated, to keep it cool, if it is cool from snow load, then who cares? If your pitch is not decent enough to keep the ridge above the snow, you should not install a ridge vent, IMHO

Unhappy Look at the "filters"

Most ridge vents use "filters" which plug up with dust and dirt just like an HVAC filter.
Problem is you can't easily replace or clean the "filters" in ridge vents, nor will the average HO go in the attic to check if they need to be cleaned.
Cor-a-vent makes a filterless design but I haven't seen it in the local home centers.
