Floor joist bracing

Hi all,

I'm working on the insulation in my basement ceiling and there are "X" braces between the 2x10 joists. It's 1x2 or 1x3 lumber cut and tacked up to form an "X". I see it all the time, just never knew why they were there. They're obviously removed where things needed to go through the joists (like heat ducts), but they make it hard to insulate. Do they serve a purpose? Can I just remove them, or should I insulate around them?

TIA,
Jim

Thanks,
Jim

The bracing helps to stiffen the joists and reduce bounce in the floor by making the joists and subfloor act together. It would be best to insulate around them.

Thanks for the reply - I'll keep as many in tact as possible.

I have a 2nd question about the insulation.

I'll be tacking R-11 insulation up in between the floor joists. Most of the ceiling will be covered in drywall. Some of it will be running above the HVAC ducts inside a soffit. Do I need to do anything special in there to keep the insulation from sagging? Or will the staples hold it up? Chickenwire? Nothing will be over top of the insulation inside the soffit. I have encapsulated insulation with a FS factor of 25, so it's okay to leave exposed inside the soffit.

Thanks,
Jim

You could replace them with a piece of 2X10 nailed between them. But then you'll have to drill through the 2X10 if you want anything to pass through.

There are wire ties to place between joists that are slightly longer than the clear space. The wedged ties every so many feet along the bay act as a support for insulation batts.

I've seen those wire things - I wasn't sure if they were for permanent installation. You just pop 'em up in there it seems.

Also, the 2x10 suggestion is good, but probably more trouble than it's worth since I have a lot of wiring. I'll just leave the cross-bracing in place.

Thanks both for your replies.

Jim
