Welcome to the forums sstephano,

Finishing a small room in the basement isn't all that hard if you've got the knowledge, tools, & material. The knowledge part isn't so hard to learn, there's plenty of how-to links here on DIY.com. What few specialty tools you'd need for this kind of job could be rented locally & relatively inexpensively. Materials for something like this shouldn't be more than a few hundred $, but you'll save a ton on labor by doing it yourself & it'll add to the value of the home if it's properly done(good selling point for dad)

Go to the home Page for diy.com & scroll down near the bottom left (I believe) is a listing by category if actual how-to info in all manner of building trades, which match up to the forum titles. Click thru there & you'll find pretty much anything you'd need to know to build & finish the new room. After that post back with your questions, give specifics, & someone will be around to offer advice & direction.

Good luck & have fun!

BTW, what's a LANS?

I'd have 2 guys, frame up the walls, hang & tape the drywall the first day, then figure 2 successive days for the 2nd & 3rd mudcoats, after that you've 1-2 days for primer & paint. Then one more day for trim work & lay the rug.
