optimal humidity level in Basement?

I have just put a dehumidifier in my basement. The humidifier has a vague dial control from 1 to 10 with 10 being the driest. I have a separate humidity meter that i have placed in the basement to monitor the effectiveness of the dehumidifier. With the setting at 5, the humidity level is kept at about 60%.

My question is, what is a good humidity level in the basement? Is 60% still too high? Does the proper humidity percent depend on the temperature of the basement?

Thanks for your help

bplinder,

In most homes, relative humidity should remain between 30 and 40 percent during the winter. Higher relative humidities are likely to cause condensation problems on windows and outside walls. Lower relative humidities may be uncomfortable and cause static electricity.

In basements, humidity levels can be around 50%.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for tip. I increased the dehumidifier to get the humidity down to 50%.
Now I just have to get a new dehumidifier that has a hose connector so I don't have to keep emptying the water.

bplinder,

You're very welcome!

Go to HD and get a hose (measure the outside diameter of the fitting) and clamp....this will help you in not having to fuss with it!

You should feel a difference in a short time if you don't already!

Good Luck!
