Musty smell and mold questions.

Hi all, I recently got some water in my finished part of the basement because of heavy rain and was looking for some advice on how to get rid of the musty smell and also on what the best way to fight mold. I have been using a clorox/water mixture but would like to know if that is the best way to go. I sprayed that on the floor but would also like to do something behind the drywall so that it kills anything that might be sitting between the drywall and concrete foundation. Thanks for any help.

When it comes to killing mold and mildew, it is hard to beat bleach (Clorox). A mixture of bleach 10% in water will kill almost any germ around. For tough concentrations of mold and mildew you might want to try a solution 25% in water. (The solution of bleach 25% in water is caustic and warrants protective clothing and eyewear.)

The 10% solution you can spray and leave. The 25% solution will need to be rinsed off of any surface that you don't want to be bleached and ectched.

After you have this treated, ventilatioin will help clear the air.

The key to keeping this at bay will be to control the water. The spores from mold and mildew are always around. Whenever the right conditions exist, the problem will recur.

Hope this helps.

Basement flood

You will not be able to clean behind drywall. If flooding was severe and insulation behind drywall got wet and you see signs of mold/mildew on drywall, then it is possible to cut out bottom portion of drywall, remove affected insulation, and replace.

Running a dehumidifier will expedite drying out of basement and keep humidity under control. Running fans will improve air circulation as well as expedite drying out of basement.

The bleach/water solution is the best approach to flood cleanup and disinfection to control mold/mildew.

Address moisture and flooding issues to prevent future problems with flooding.
