jack-post assembly

I recently purchased a TigerBrand model J-S-100 adjustable jack-post from HomeDepot that I will use to support the end of a LVL beam in my basement. Out of the box the top and bottom plates as well as the adjusting screw mechanism are not welded in place. Are these parts supposed to stay todether via the weight of the load? Or should the parts be first welded together.

Thanks,

Jay

Think of the post you purchased as a kit. Some assembly is required...
