Attic Stair beneath Carport
I have a ranch house with access to the attic via a very small, difficult to access opening in a hall closet. The house has a carport which I thought would be great place locate a pull down attic stair casing. I have never seen such an access under a carport before. Obviousily I concerned about home security, however, I would think a lock on the access would address unwanted intruders. Is this a bad idea, all comments are appreciated.

Hmmm.... I didn't have a carport to worry about, but when I recently installed my attic stairs, I decided upon the (future) kitchen area.
I wanted a central location that allowed easy access from all parts of the house and I didn't want it to be in a narrow hallway or where furniture placement might cause trouble.
You don't need to modify the stairs themselves for security, you could install a locking trapdoor at the top of the stairs, or perhaps a regular door at the top of the stairs.
For a regular door to work, you would need to wall in the top of the stairs.
