subfloor over concrete in basement

im looking to install a tile floor in my basement. theres alot of glue residue left over from the carpeting that was once there so it would be easier i think to make a subfloor and put the tile on top of that.

ive read some other threads and a subfloor over conrete seems to be frowned upon. my basement is extremely dry, there has never been water down there from the outside since weve moved in 3 years ago.

would i be ok with just plywood over the concrete since my basement is so dry? also whats the best way to attach the subfloor to the concrete? thanks

I would try to get the glue up. A nice new sharp scraper might work. It would be tons cheaper and probably take the same amount of labor.

Re: subfloor over concrete in basement

is there any problems laying the tile directly on the concrete floor if i can get the glue up? part of the reason i considered the sublfoor was i didnt think you could put the tile directly on the concrete.

Re: subfloor over concrete in basement

i went to home depot today and got a new scraper and some "instant green" i think its called, one of those glue offs.

it appears to do the job, but the concrete still has the glue marks where the glue once was, as far as i can tell its a stain on the concrete from the glue, because the surface feels identical to the other areas where there never was glue.

is this acceptable to put a new flooring over?

Re: Re: subfloor over concrete in basement

also, does anyone have any other "faster" ideas for removing this glue? floor sander maybe? my basement is 52' x 16' and the entire basement floor is covered with this carpet glue. at the rate im going removing all this glue, ill be done sometime next decade and/or dead.

any ideas? im desperate. thanks

Fastest Way of removing glue

I suggest you take a trip to your local rental shop. They should have the option of giving you a 15" diameter sander. Try starting with a 60 grit disc and if that doesn't work you could always rent a diamond grinder head that goes on one of these machines. The pros use the diamond to grind down uneven spots on concrete floors so it should remove the glue quite easily, be careful to keep the machine moving though or you will make a depression

You could try this product that seems designed for the task:

Seems like alot of work to remove the glue, have you considered
the dry-core route ( I realize its a little pricey ) just wondering?

yeah ive looked into that. to drycore the entire floor it would cost me something like $2,500. the tiles im getting for the basement are only 78 cents each, and whole floor itself is going to be under $1,000 roughly.
