Enlarging an existing basement?

Enlarging an existing basement?
This may sound odd I know, but is it in any way possible to convert a partial basement into a full basement in an existing house that is completely built?
My family and I are moving into an older house with a partial basement, and due to the propertys age, the basements ceiling is very low and most walkways down there are fairly narrow and look as though they may have been constructed for use more as a larder or wine cellar.
Is it possible to expand this out to the full width of the property?
Aside from this I don't think theres any room for my wood shop and I really did have my heart set on having one this time around.
R Lawrence.

Ortem,
What you ask has been done but few by those as a DIY project. It is best based upon what you have to get a professsional to look at it and determine the extent of the work involved. Again, this is costly but that wood shop would be nice. Get some bids and consider it a good investment for years to come.
Good Luck!

Ortem,
Manpower, Timbers, Jacks. This is a project that requires coordination, safety concerns are a high priority. Mistakes at doing this will cost you a home! "Underpinning" will be required and this is a process in itself. In short, all that is required will have to be done by someone knowledgable in this process. I have seen it done and we are talking about allot of work and of course a Building Permit.
As mentioned before, get bids for the work.
