Drywall directly to foam?

My stairway is right against the foundation wall. I don't have much space (they did leave me a two inch gap on the treads and stringers but it doesn't go through to under the stairway), and I don't know how to attatch the bottom of the studs without a plate/insulate, etc.

Here was my crazy thought. For that small of a space (6' tapering to 0), can I just put a top plate where the upstairs framing ends and then glue 2" foam to the foundation wall and glue thin drywall directly to the foam?

Or is there some other way I'm overlooking?

Why not build a frame of 2" furring strips nailed directly to the wall? Then attach wallboard to the strips. Gluing alone does not feel safe.

How are you going to attach the foam? You can glue drywall to the concrete and it will be solid. If you glue it to the foam and the foam is floating? I don't know.

I was thinking:

Foundation | Glue | Foam | Glue | Drywall

So the foam is glued to the wall and the drywall is glued to the foam.

Smile 2" is plenty

Ok, first for your bottom plate, turn a 2X4 sideways (which will be a 1 1/2). Then using tapcon screws secure it to the wall, attach your 1/2 drywall to your frame. As for isulation you could use normal fibreglass, or if you have foam then you will just have to cut it back to an 1 1/2.

OK it wasn't so tough

Got this done last night. It was not as big of a deal as I expected. I used 1 x 3 furring strips and Lowes sells a white foam panel precut to fit between 1 x 3s @ 16" OC.

This is only R3 but it leaves room for me to put the drywall between the steps and the wall instead of having to scribe around. And it's probably less than 70 sq ft surface area.
