Framing concrete ceiling and glass block windows

I have started to tackle building out my basement rec room. Half of the room is under a concrete slab (back porch). It also has 2 glass block windows under the concrete slab. The walls are standard cinder blocks. I am not sure how to frame and put an insulated ceiling in that area. Any suggestions? The only options I could come up with is 1) glue- but there is a plastic vapor barrier under the concrete slab 2) put up firring strips by driving concrete nails in- however, I am concerned about cracking the slab if drivin in too close to edge.

Bruce Beerman,

How big is this area? If it is not too large I would install per say ceiling joists and they could be supported by the surrounding walls. To save on ceiling height make the walls just short enough to leave about 1 inch below the slab. Thes joists could be 2x6 or longer depending on the type of ceiling finish you intend to put up. You don't want it to be drooping in the middle so the size is critical unless you were to install suspended ceiling.

What do you think?

The area under the concrete porch is 13x9 feet. It also has 2 glass block windows at the very top. I was planning on using 2x4 studs for the walls. But I am stalled trying to figure out how to tie it into the ceiling. The unfinished ceiling height is about 7 feet. I was going to drywall this section including the ceiling.

Doug sent me an email with some great detailed animated drawings. He advised using 2x6 joists frame and placing it on top of my already planned out 2x4 frame walls. He just suggested leaving frame walls an extra 1 inch from my cinder block walls. Great drawings Doug.

This is a GREAT idea! I just joined this forum and now realize how useful this forum can be Very quick response.
