Railing Height

I am confused as I have seen that an acceptable height of the top of the railing from the nose of the stairs can be from 34" to 38" and some places I have seen 40" is acceptable. I have a straight staircase from the first floor to the basement (no landings). The top of the railing leading to the basement is 36" off the nose of the treads. I have to build a small railing with a post at the end of the staircase to cover 2' of stairs. The current railing ends and then there is 2' of steps. I have been told I don't need anything but there will be a lot of children using those stairs and I feel safer with them covered all the way. What would be an acceptable height that any code would cover. I live in GA.

Since you're continuing an existing rail, I would stick with the 36" height on that end.

Install the new rail parallel to the tread noses on the remaining steps. If the rail isn't parallel, it won't look right.
