Question Insulating for noise

I am in the process of refinishing my basement and would like to insulate the "furnace room" to prevent hearing the furnace turn on/off. The room is a combination furnace room and storage area and is approximately 160 sq. ft. with 2X3 construction. I would only like to insulate the interior walls. Is there any safety issue with this?

Shouldn't be any problem. Since it's interior walls, you could use unfaced batts

Thanks, my only concern was that it was that one of the walls is about 3 ft. from the rear of the furnace.

afiorillo1,

The fix is to add drywall to this, firetape only.

When in doubt, check the furnace installation specifications. Most furnaces are zero-clearance in the rear, which means that there is no heat problem there. Fiberglass is very fire resistant anyway. Unfortunately, insulation does a better job on high frequency sound than low frequency sound, and furnace noise is pretty low frequency.

If the inside of that wall is already got drywall on it, I'd agree with Doug, just add another layer of drywall & fire tape it.
