Leveling Basement Floor
I am planning to use floor leveler in a small room (about 200 square feet) in my basement. The directions on the bag say to pour the stuff out, then spread it with a "long-handled gauged spreader." What exactly is that? Do I really need it? Is it something I can rent?

They kind of look like a funny rake with adjustable teeth. The teeth are on a bar which adjusts to the depth your putting on.
You can rent them at any good rental store. One thing you did not mention was how much leveling you need to do. What is the difference between the high point and the low point ?

Most of what needs leveling is just minor low areas (1/8-1/4" deep or so). However, from both ends of the room the floor slopes toward the center. The floor in the middle is probably 3/4" lower than the edges (must've been amateur concrete finishers that day). The stuff I'm using, according to the directions on the bag, can be applied up to 1 inch deep in one pour.
Might it work better if I leveled the really low center area first and then applied a thin coat to the entire floor?
