Framing Under Stairs

I have been unable to find any information regarding requirements for framing under basement stairs. I am creating a closet under the stairs and have heard that code requires it to be drywalled. My question is, Do I frame out a ceiling for the closet that follows the stairs up or do I attach the drywall directly to the bottom of the stairs.

Also, if I frame the ceiling, is it normal to use 2x4 flat or on edge?

Any info or additional help would be appreciated. If anyone has a pic of what they did that would probably help the most.

Needs to be 5/8 s/rock to meet code. The purpose of the rock is to protect framing in the event of fire. How you do it depends upon how the stairs are constructed.

Hi all, Starting to design my basement for finishing. Not much natural light down there of course. I remember hearing somewhere about making a "window" out of glass block and putting lights behind it to give the illusion of a real window with daylight. Has anyone done this? Any specifics? What type of lights did you use? How does it look? I'm afraind that after a while I might get tired of it and think it's kind of cheesy. Any other comments? BartmanRead More

We are in the process of remodeling our basement. We are looking at suspended ceilings and just wanted to know if anyone had any experience (good or bad) with the "Ceiling Max" system compared to the traditional suspended ceiling? Any info would be great.Read More
