I would not shoot a nail into one with a nailer. I however would probably hammer in some small nails to hang something on. I think you win. Chances are your friend could shoot in nails all the time and it would not hurt a thing. But it only takes that one time and you have a problem.

It does not make any difference what kind of nailer. Lolly columns come in concrete, wood or metal.

Hey Jack,

Are Lolly columns a proprietary item, or am I confusing it with a lally column? I find definitions for both spellings as a concrete-filled steel pipe, however I always thought one was the concrete and steel and the other was a proprietary, adjustable support. My web search has left me more confused.

Thanks,
Jeff

Lolly.......Pops????

I see this a lot. First, there is no such thing as a "Lolly" column. The correct term is Lally column. A Lally column is a cylindrical steel column usually filled with concrete and invented by an Irishman named, surprisingly... Lally. It was sold by the brand name of Lally. Through the years, the term Lally column has been applied to any STEEL column used in residential construction. Any other type of column ie. wood, concrete, etc. is correctly referred to as a post, column, etc.

I would not shoot, hammer, or drill into a small (under 10" thick) concrete column ...EVER!! Small concrete columns used in residential construction could be marginally reinforced (if at all) or worse yet, prestressed or post-tensioned. Drilling, hammering, shooting cound have dire consequences!

You may be thinking of Lolly-Pops.

thick steel filled with concrete

Your partner will need more than 22 cal. to put a nail in that thing More like a 44 cal magnum job. Unless there is no steel casing, then I would not shoot one with even a peashooter
