attic roof truss

I need to raise ceiling 5'long and 5' high to expand a stairway to allow for more headroom. What do I need to do with the existing wooden roof truss that is in the way?

You dont say for sure just what you want to do here . You cant cut the truss out if thats what you mean. You should have an engineer look at it first.

Sounds like a dormer will end up in that location.

Is it a roof truss in the way or is it a ceiling Joist? Is the framing of this roof system conventional or trussed? It sounds like Steve is on the right track with the suggestion of a dormer but it a little hard to tell. More info on what you want to do or perhaps a picture will elicit more exact responses. Good Luck.
