whole house fan - belt or direct drive?

any advice? and is there a rating of how big of a fan to use compared to square footage of living space?

A belt drive is quieter, but requires maintenance. One rule of thumb is to multiply your house's square footage by three to obtain the number of cubic feet of air to move per minute. 1,000 square feet of living space would require a fan capable of moving 3,000 cubic feet per minute.

Go for the belt drive. You have control over the speed and noise that way.
