wanting to install attic stairs

I am looking to install attic stairs in my 90 yr old house. The upstairs hallway runs perpendicular to the ceiling joists, and has an access hole at one end. The wall on the one side is a load bearing wall and on the other side is the wall next to the first to second floor staircase. Can I safely cut the ceiling joists to frame and install the attic stairs, or do I need to do the installation in a different location between two joists?

Not sure what you have there in the attic. Id say to be safe put it in running with the ceiling rafters .
