Pouring a new basement floor over my DIRT existing basement

any advice would be GREAT and thanks in advance

I am biting the bullet and going to cough up the 3K to get this done.... The house I own was built in 1840 and has a fieldstone foundation and a dirt basement floor. It has held up this long with dirt but after the 300K renovation I think anoyone that buys this house from me at the new "asking price" would never consider it with a dirt floor. I am also hoping it helps it to smell a bit better (a but musty now) and help to deal with any moisture problems.... I also plan on hardwiring and hardpiping three dehumidifiers down there as well and running the PVC piping to the sump....

anyway my question to everyone is pouring the 3 inch thick concrete down should I lay a lining of thick mill plastic down first to really keep the moisture out? So it will be dirt, plastic, then concrete? Has anyone ever done this...

would love to talk to anyone that has doen such a thing in the past. My email is (sramponi @ optimaleng . com)

also has anyone ever ran a few dehumidiers together (using the garden hose attachment) and connecting it to pvc and running it so it drains to the sump and then the sump out to the exterior?

Thanks all again for the support

6 Mil Plastic

To prepare a dirt floor for a concrete pad you need need to install a layer of at least a 6mil plastic sheeting over the floor. The seams need to be lapped by at least a foot and be taped or permanently sealed.

Concrete should be at least 4" thick.

You should consult your local building code enforcement office for other details which may require your to first install a layer of washed stone and foam insulation under the concrete.

It would be wise to install a perimeter french drain to a sump before installing the concrete.

It may not be wise to use 3 dehumidifiers since they can freeze up in a small area.

Thanks, my house is 90 feet long so was thinking of putting one every 30 feet or so, and this would only be for the hot and humid months about 3-4 months a year... Thanks again for the reply
