built-in storage under basement stairs
#1

We are in the process of remodeling our basement and would like to use the space under the stairs as a built-in entertainment center and storage space, looking into the new rec room. We haven't had any sucess finding pictures or plans that would help us come up with a good layout. Any suggestions? Thanks so much!

themigs,
I assume that you obtained a building permit?
One important note on under stair storage, it is a requirement to apply at least 1/2" drywall to cover all wood of stairway.
Here is an example,

You may just want to start sketching and design something that suits your needs. There are storage books available but maybe the library would be a good start.
Good Luck!

logan00,
So you didn't get a permit.
The reason for covering the stairway is per,
"IRC R311.2.2 UNDER STAIR PROTECTION
Enclosed accessible space under stairs shall have walls, under stair surface and any soffits protected on the enclosed side with 1/2" gypsum board."
Standard requirements by municipalities will read like this "Enclosed useable space under the stairs must be protected with 5/8 inch type x gypsum wallboard." (Some accept 1/2" but can defiate from IRC)
This, in conjucntion with fire blocking will prevent fire spreading to the upper level.
Does this helps?

I'm in MN and was told that if I put a door on that area (split under stairs) that I would have to put 5/8" not only on the under stair area but also the "ceiling" of the entire storage area. My auto creeper came in handy for that!

You had also mentioned an entertainment center, requiring electrical, another reason to fire safe that area.
In addition to 5/8 type "X" on the bottom of the stairway and walls, consider a smoke detector in the basement ceiling as well as near the top of the stairway.
Remember, this is the exit.
