Question Removing Old Tiles From Basement Floor

Don't know if they are asbestos or vinyl but they are attached to the concrete - how do I best remove them to prepare the floor for something new/better?

Just install over them.

Question Removing Tiles In Basement?

We considered putting a new floor over them - but in some areas the tiles are already missing, so there is uneveness and there has been some moisture in the basement and I want to tear out all the old smelly stuff, not just cover it up. So - anybody else have a suggestion?

Couple of things I have used are a flat spade, scraper and a floor scraper (big blade long handle).

Home depot and lowes both have them work good

When you remove the tile, the adhesive may also contain asbestos.

First you will need to determine if this is a "true" cut back adhesive. A true "cut back", is made from asphaltic material, is not water sensitive, and will not soften when exposed to water.

Test a small section with hot water, if it softens and becomes easily scraped for removal, then thats what you use. If not, a removal media will be required.
