if the non insululate part is finished, with drywall or any other finishing over studs, the drywall will need to be removed to properly insulate and to setup the vapour barrier.
We're adding a 2-story addition (19'x22') to our 1937 home, which will be a family room on the first floor with a master bedroom above it. This will not be our final home to grow-old-together in, though we'll probably be here for 3-5 years. The architect drew the plans with 3 options, the least expensive of which is a slab on grade, followed by a crawlspace, followed by a full basement. If we decided against a full basement for financial reasons, is there any argument against a slab on grade as opposed to a crawlspace? Is a slab colder (we'll have hardwood floors in that family room)? A friend said that if we were carpeting it wouldn't make as much of a difference, but with hardwood floors we might find the slab on grade too cool in the New York winter months. Anyone's thoughts appreciated.Read More
I want to build a gameroom in my basement. Biggest issue is an unlevel floor. The room is going to be about 15x20 or so. My plan was to use pressure treated 2x4's to create a bottom plate, then use some self leveling concrete to make the floor even for a fooseball and pool table, then frame the walls and create the room. Is this the best way or am I off the mark?Read More
